Mentoring consumer products startups with SKU

You might not know it, but Austin has the top consumer products accelerator in the country: SKU. Companies selected into the SKU program participate in a one of a kind 14-week program that serves as an MBA and all-star network platform for their business. During the course of the program, founders and leadership teams attend organized classes, in-depth, breakout and problem-solving sessions, meeting face-to-face with SKU Mentors every Tuesday for twelve weeks.

I’m so very honored to be a Mentor for Track 6, which includes amazing companies like Guiltless Goodies, Sway Water, Meridian Hive, Pure Spoon, Mosie Baby, and Chinook Seedery. I am working directly with Lindsay and Daniel Crouch, the wonderful founders of Guiltless Goodies. Recently, I co-taught a “Consumer Marketing” class for the track with Scott Marcus, VP of Marketing for Vital Farms.

At the end of the SKU program, the startups will be presenting at a pitch event with an audience of investors, retailers and partners. To help, improve their presentation skills, I taught a seminar called “How to Build a Presentation Persona,” with material from my most recent book, Fiercely You: Be Fabulous and Confident by Thinking Like a Drag Queen. I had each person create an confident, powerful alter ego or persona that they can channel when they are on stage. I brought in costumes so each person could dress up as their persona. Loved all the creativity that folks brought to this exercise!
